The
Kaiawa
Gardens

The Kaiawa gardens was given its
nameby the Maori words Kai meaning
food and Awa for river. It is symbolic to
our school as this is where we learn
about and grow food for the school and
community.
Mrs McKie worked with Room 10
students to paint the fence to the
entrance of the Kaiawa gardens.
There are pictures of plants to show
what sort there are down there.  The
colours the children chose are bright
and bold so that they stand out. It is a
nice entrance into the gardens as well as
it brightens up the playing field area.

In the Kaiawa gardens we have a chicken
coop with about 7 free range chickens.
They lay eggs which students sell after
school to parents.The chickens were
kindly donated to the school several years
ago.Around each eating area in the school
we have special bins where our food
scraps go. We are very careful with what
we put in there as the food then gets sorted
out and distrubted between the worm farm
and the chicken coop.  Our chickens never
go hungry as they have our scraps as well
as chicken pellets.
Classes around the
school work hard in the
gardens.  Each year group
has their own plot in which
they plant their seedlings,
water themand can watch
them grow. Students have
learnt a lot about growing
fruit and vegetables.
